Since Apple introduced wireless charging for the iPhone, they need to use glass on the back of the device. Although it makes the device look beautiful, it also provides us with another side of the phone that may be hacked.
After you find your back glass of iPhone cracked, what should you do? You may have the following options:
Option 1: Replace the entire housing.
This option can solve the problem of broken glass, but it will be very expensive. On average, the repair shop must charge $300 for this repair.
Below is an image of the appearance of the rear case. The back glass can be ordered with or without the Apple logo.
Option 2: Laser machine
You may need to use a laser machine to burn the glue from behind the glass. We found that this machine may cost approximately $2,000.
You also need a way to exhaust the fumes from the machine during use, which may cost an additional $200. If you are not a repair shop owner, a laser machine is not necessary.
Option 3: Heating and prying tools
We know that in extreme heat, we can finally remove the glass, but we need a way to fix the case in one place (and it's too hot to touch).
We decided to try to mix the metal phone holder provided by the supplier with the clip to ensure that the holder does not move. This way we can evenly distribute the heat on the back glass of the iPhone and remove the glass. The cost of the metal bracket is US$75 and the cost of the fixture is US$20. This is the best choice for us.
Following is a guide on how to replace the back glass for iPhone without a laser.
Step 1: Completely disassemble the iPhone.
A complete disassembly of the iPhone is extremely important. If there are any plastic parts in the phone, extreme heat will melt them, and they must be replaced. If you have never disassembled an iPhone, we recommend that you ask a professional to disassemble and assemble it.
Step 2: Fix the iPhone to the metal bracket + clip.
We found that this metal tool holder is a bit difficult to fix the shell, but it can do the job. It may take some time for it to fix it for you, and be careful not to scratch the frame when fixing it to the metal bracket.
Make sure to clip this tool to your desk to prevent it from moving around. If you clip it near the bottom of the case, it can also prevent the phone from sliding back on you.
Step 3: Heat and find the entrance under the rear glass.
We found this step to be the trickiest part. If the glass does not have too many cracks, it is difficult to find a place to start removing the glass. You may need to break the glass further to start working.
We can find this damaged "entry" in the upper left corner of the iPhone. Use a prying tools to get open while heating with a standard heat gun.
Step 4: Completely remove the rest of the glass
Removing the remaining glass was like a piece of cake. With continuous heat from the heat gun and thin blade prying tool, we can remove the remaining glass in less than 2 minutes.
Step 5: Clean and paste a new glass sheet.
After removing the rest of the glass, make sure to clean any remaining glass on the case. We use rubbing alcohol spray and razor blades to remove glass shards.
After you have cleaned the case completely, you can put down the adhesive. We used the pre-cut adhesive that came with the "big hole" back glass. You can see in the picture below that our adhesive has a little wrinkle, so it is not perfect, although it seems irrelevant.
If you do not have a pre-cut adhesive, we recommend that you use E8000 glue to glue the back glass to the housing. If using E8000, please clamp the glass on the case for at least 15 minutes.
Step 6: Reassemble the iPhone
Completely reassemble the iPhone and open it to make sure everything is in order.
After that, the water proof of the iPhone might depends how well you reassemble it. If you are not sure how to make it, or you are not confident enough, we suggest you to go to the repair shop to make it. They will handle it perfectly for you.
