Even a super big company like Apple would be "stuck in the neck" by a small chip.

Just when everyone was talking about the reasons for the failure.A report showed that the reason why Apple's 5G baseband chip development failed is not because of technical research failures, but because of the infringement of two Qualcomm patents.

Apple Can't bypass Qualcomm's two patents, does that mean Apple's 5G baseband project will be suspended? Of course not. Apple is definitely impossible to give up its baseband research , it has invest a lot of manpower, material and financial resources in the self-developed 5G baseband plan. Even if it cannot bypass the patents, it can choose to pay a certain patent license fee to obtain the patent authorization of Qualcomm.

The development of baseband chip is very complicated, But with Apple's strong financial resources and high R&D research budget (a total of more than 24 billion US dollars, more than three times that of Qualcomm), it’s not difficult to achieve self-development of 5G baseband chip but a matter of time.Ed Snyder, who has studied the wireless chip market for a long time, said that Apple is expected to develop a baseband chip for iPhone in 2024 and will completely replace the Qualcomm baseband chip in the following year 2025.

For Apple, compared with purchasing 5G chips from external suppliers, using self-developed 5G baseband chips can further reduce the material cost of it’s products.Therefore, in recent years, Apple has also been accelerating the research and development of 5G baseband chips, striving to get rid of its dependence on Qualcomm as soon as possible. For Qualcomm, it is also trying to reduce its dependence on Apple. Although Apple is indeed a big client, if Apple has its own 5G baseband chip, they have to make plans for this challenge as soon as possible.
